The Little Kindergartner That Could
As I mentioned yesterday, Miss Elliott ALMOST missed her first day of kindergarten.
She came down with a stomach bug on Wednesday afternoon!
I called the school late Wednesday to basically report her absence on Thursday and was told that as long as she didn’t develop a fever that she could come to school if she felt better in the morning.
It wasn’t an easy start, but she got up, came downstairs all on her own and got herself some crushed ice, laid on the couch, had a piece of peanut butter toast and half a cinnamon roll, hemmed and hawed about going to school, reluctantly put on her darling new turquoise zebra print outfit from her friend Ava, fussed about what shoes to wear, hemmed and hawed some more and finally……we were on our way!
She thinks she can…
She thinks she can…
Emilie, a familiar face on the first day:
Her sweet teacher, Mrs. Howard:
A little pep talk from a teary-eyed, sunglass wearin’ Mama:
{Although she didn’t need the pep talk}
Pure confidence:
Right up in the front:
Learning the “Good morning” song:
*****
It wasn’t the exact start that we were looking for. Seeing her sad face wrapped in the pink blanket chewing on ice the first day of kindergarten was not the look we wanted. But she rallied and we didn’t give in to whatever anxiety she may have been displaying or feeling.
It was hard…I didn’t want any apprehension she may have had to be confused with the fact the she may have not been 100% recovered from the previous afternoon’s “situation”. I went with the woman in the school office’s words and forged ahead. I couldn’t “give in” to her not feeling like going to school.
Not on the first day.
Of kindergarten.
She was fine.
She perked up when she saw all her classmates and teacher.
She hung her backpack.
She pulled her name off the board and put it in the little white attendance basket.
She washed her hands.
She sat on the rug.
She waved good-bye at 8:15 a.m. and waved hello at 1:47 p.m.
She made it through the first day of kindergarten.
I KNEW SHE COULD!

Amy – So darling!! I love her little outfit. Bummer to hear that Elliot was not feeling well on her first day, but it makes for a great story. Katie told me that she signed up for the half marathon. I put it on my calendar (so I can come and cheer you guys on – no I am not running).

Amy, you are so wonderful with words and poetry. I could almost feel all the emotions that went down yesterday. Thanks for a great “snapshot” of Elle’s first day.

So sweet – makes me tear up thinking about my little one going through the same process next year. I am sure that she is just going to love school.

Amy, what a delightful record! If Elliott and Holden ever write their memoirs, they’ll have plenty of childhood material–thanks to you and Jay. Keep up the great work!
